The New M&M Boys?
If you're one to believe the rumors -- and I am -- that Randy Moss has just about worn out his welcome in Minnesota, then you have to believe one of the teams on the top of his wish lists is the New York Jets. Not only would he love the spotlight of New York, but he would be reunited with his friend and favorite quarterback, Chad Pennington. Vikings coach Mike Tice was quoted in the Minneapolis Star Tribune saying he expected Moss to be with his team for the rest of his career and denied any friction between the two. Maybe they aren't tired of him yet, but usually -- as the old saying goes -- where there's smoke, there's fire.
So, if you're Jets GM Terry Bradway -- and I'm not -- then you have to pick up the phone and get a feeling for just what it would take to get that other Moss in Jet green and form the most dangerous receiving corps in all of football.
Since Terry isn't here right now, lets take a look at what it
would take. You can start with the #12 pick in this year's draft. The Vikes would love to have two first rounders in this deep draft to help build their D and replace Randy. Lets say goodbye to next year's number one while we're at it. There's a chance other lower level picks would have to trade hands, but the two first rounders would be the principle picks involved.
As for players currently on the Jets roster? Minnesota needs help on defense, but as we all know the Jets aren't exactly over flowing with talent on that side of the ball either. The most likely candidates to go would be either John Abraham or Shaun Ellis. Now if you're Terry Bradway -- remember, we already determined that I'm not -- you try to sell them on Abraham. Point out that he had 6 sacks in 7 games and hope that's enough to sway them, because Ellis will mean much more to this team in the long run than Abraham. However, we're dealing with the best receiver in the game and in order to get a deal done the Jets -- along with any other team interested - won't be in a position to tell Minnesota anyone is off limits.
Think about it though. Who on this Jets team
is untouchable? Especially when it comes to bringing in an all-time great. Obviously Pennington is, but the Vikings are all set at the quarterback position, so that wouldn't be an issue. Next in line would most likely be Santana Moss, who Minnesota would surely love to have as Randy's replacement. Now the point of the Jets acquiring Randy would be to pair him with Santana, but....
When it comes to adding this kind of talent to your team, you do what it takes to get it done. And at the end of the day, if you can get it done with Santana and some picks, you do it. Period.
But lets say the Jets are able to work out a deal without Santana. They would put one of the most feared passing attacks on the field every single game. Yes, a Paul Hackett offense would finally be feared. Last season it always seemed as if there were three players on Santana's back, yet he still managed to go for over 1,100 yards. With Randy lining up on the other side, defensive coordinators wouldn't know what to do with the two of them.
Sure, the Vikings very well could continue to deal with his bitching and off the field issues. But you can't hit the jackpot if you don't play the game.
Hey, you never know.
